Street-side recycling is coming to Winthrop!

Earth Day 2011 is day one for recycling on the boardwalk in Winthrop. Methow Recycles is excited to support Methow Recycling Roundup's successful launch of this project. A festive kick-off event is planned for 10:30 on Friday, April 22 in front of Farmers State Bank.

Last Day for the Metal Drive is Soon!

Sunday, June 6th, 8am - 3pm is the last day to drop off your your scrap metal & appliances.

No battery or tire collection on this day.

As you load your vehicle keep in mind that we have separate piles for each of the following categories of metal:

- appliances
- miscellaneous scrap steel
- cast iron
- barbed wire & light gauge fencing
- cable
- chain
- aluminum
- copper

It's running out fast, but there is still time to recycle vehicles with titles. If you have one & haven't already contacted me, please do so ASAP at 996-2696.

Cash for Appliances!

The Methow Recycles Metal Drive has just been accepted as a Cash for Appliances recycling site!

Check out their website for details, but the short version is that if you buy a new highly efficient refrigerator or clothes washer and recycle the old one, you'll get mail in receipts worth $75 per appliance. The limit is one fridge or washer per customer. That's $150! So don't put that old fridge in the garage, bring it to the metal drive!

Remember, we will need to charge $15 for removal of the coolant.

Metal Drive 2010 Dates & Details

Drop-off dates for the metal drive are Saturday, May 22 and Sunday Jun 6. Hours are 8am-3pm each day. Memorial Day weekend is in between so you will have lots of time for those property cleanup work parties!

The drop-off location is NOT at Methow Recycles, but about 3/4 of a mile further south on Airport Road in Twisp. Please enter from the NORTH only.

Volunteers are still needed. It's a kick in the pants, and the shifts are short. Please contact Gina at 996-3398 if you'd like to help.

Below is a partial list of what you can bring, but the bottom line is that if it's metal, you can bring it. Please limit length to 18'.

Everything is free except for refrigerators and freezers, which cost $15 to properly remove the refrigerants if present.

Appliances - washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, pressure tanks

Pipe, wire, & cable- barbed wire, irrigation pipe, electrical wire, galvanized or copper pipe, logging chain or cable

Things with engines - lawnmowers, snowmobiles, etc. - ALL FLUIDS REMOVED, any plastic, rubber, or wooden parts removed.

All other metal - scrap steel, rusty metal what-is-it, cast iron, old roofing, old farm stuff, bed springs, aluminum doors/windows (please remove glass), satellite dishes, stainless steel, bike frames, obviously empty tanks (a big hole makes it obvious).

What you CANNOT bring:
Electronics, closed containers (fuel, paint, or pesticide especially) things with a lot of plastic, rubber, or wood. We reserve the right to reject any items. If you're not sure, call Betsy at 996-2696.

We're on for a Metal Drive this spring!!

We'll be accepting vehicles, scrap metal, appliances, barbed wire, cable, you name it!

If you have a vehicle to get rid of we can help with paperwork, fluid removal and towing. Please get in touch with Betsy at recycle@methowrecycles.org if you have a vehicle in need of recycling!

To anyone who has too much to get to the site in Twisp - please contact me, I'd love to help! We might even be able to bring the equipment to your place if there's enough.

Horizon Flats Drop-off is open!

Our Winthrop Drop-off area open for the season!

This site is at the top of Horizon Flats Road, directly across from North Valley Lumber.

Flattened corrugated cardboard goes in the green bin. In the pretty red & blue "sled" we are currently accepting Aluminum Cans, Newspaper, and Magazines & Catalogs. As we gain experience with how this is used we will carefully add, and hopefully never take away, other commodities.

Many thanks to partners Methow Valley Sanitation Service and GK Industrial helping to expand recycling opportunities with these sleds. Thanks also to the Town of Winthrop for the location.

Is this a good year for a Metal Drive?

We're not sure, but we hope so! With commodity markets as volatile as they've been, we're approaching this cautiously, and will announce our decision by March 15th.

There are two main ingredients to the decision:

1. Pricing and processing costs, which we're working on.

2. How much metal are we likely to get, which is where you come in.

All vehicles that come to the metal drive need to have all fluids removed and a title or other proper documentation. We can help navigate this. You can haul the vehicle to the site in Twisp yourself, or have it towed at a reduced cost by one of our local towers.

If you have vehicles you'd like to get to the metal drive, please contact Betsy right away and let her know how many you've got.

Last time we relocated the equipment to two more properties to do clean up there. If you have a mountain of scrap metal or the back 40 is full of old cars, please let Betsy know about this also. We can help get the place cleaned up, and save property owners a whole bunch of work and money. No, you can't call in your neighbor's property, but you can let them know about the opportunity, and have them get in touch.

In addition to vehicles, all other kinds of metal are processed at the metal drive, including appliances.
